Hand-painted reproduction is a very old and treasured discipline.
When I copy a work of art, I show my admiration for the original artist and his or her skill which is the result of many years of striving towards beauty.
The great painters of the past often had students who diligently copied their works down to the last detail. Back then, people did not distinguish as much between the original work and the student’s work as we do today. Often, the great artists also painted several versions of their works.
Rembrandt’s workshop was filled with students copying his paintings. A lot of these skilled painters have aroused the interest of the art world, because today we know that Rembrandt got the credit for many works painted by his students.
Until recently, reproducing of the works of great artists was part of the curricula of art academies all over Europe.
It is completely legal to copy a painting, as long as it is indicated that it is a copy.
My reproductions carry my signature – or an inscription stating the name of the original artist.
